Interested in Keeping Up with Recalled Products?

Monday, June 29th, 2009

We’ve shown you how to keep up with food recalls using the Food and Drug Administration’s web site, so here’s a link to keep you up to speed on product recalls:

http://www.cpsc.gov/

At the CPSC web site, you can sign up for email updates. Each time a recall is declared you’ll receive an email describing the product or model being recalled, the potential danger or injury associated with the product and how to dispose of the product. Everything from children’s toys to common household items are included in these email updates.

A voluntary recall of 20,000 Playhouse Disney Handy Manny toy sets was instituted after reports that the eyes can detach and cause a choking hazard.

Consumers have been instructed to take the toy away from their children and return it to a Disney Store for a full refund.

The toy sets have eight peices and the name “Handy Manny” on the side of the tool box. The toy was sold nationwide from October 2007 through last month.

Top 5 Toy Hazards to Keep in Mind When Holiday Shopping

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Seeing as how Christmas advertisements have already begun, prompting consumers to begin their holiday shopping earlier and earlier each year, we’ve decided to post the Top 5 Toy Hazards according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The top 5 toy hazards:

* Scooters and other Riding Toys – Riding toys, skateboards and in-line skates go fast and falls could be deadly. Helmets and safety gear should be worn at all times and be sized to fit.

* Small Balls and other Toys with Small Parts – For children younger than age three, avoid toys with small parts, which can cause choking.

* Balloons – Children under eight yrs. can choke or suffocate on un-inflated or broken balloons. Keep un-inflated balloons from children. Discard broken balloons at once.

* Magnets – For children under age six, avoid building or play sets with small magnets. If magnets or pieces with magnets are swallowed, serious injuries and/or death can occur.

* Chargers and Adapters – Charging batteries should be supervised by adults. Chargers and adapters can pose thermal burn hazards to children.

Please make sure that none of the gifts that you’ve purchased are recalled toys or children’s products.  Keep up-to-date on dangerous products by visiting www.cpsc.gov or www.recalls.gov .

The 2008 “Trouble in Toyland” Report by USPIRG

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

The U.S. Public Interest Research Group released their 2008 “Trouble in Toyland” report that outlines the various elements that make the toys dangerous along with tips and recommendations. Click here to read the full report.

According to the report, here are a few main dangers to keep an eye on: toxic phthalates, a chemical used in the production of plastics; lead in toys and kids’ jewelry; and choking hazards.

Earlier this year, Congress passed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, which will eventually ban lead except at trace amounts in paint or coatings or in any toys, jewelry or other products for use by children under 12 years old.  Unfortunately, experts say these changes wont be in place until Christmas 2009.
