The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration released a fact sheet on older people (65+) and motor vehicle crashes. These are some of the findings:
  • Older people accounted for 15% of all traffic fatalities and 18% of all pedestrian fatalities.
  • Older drivers make up 15 percent (31 million) of all licensed drivers in 2007.
  • One hundred eighty three thousand older individuals were injured in traffic crashes in 2008, accounting for 8% of all the people injured in traffic crashes.
  • Older drivers also made up 15% of all traffic fatalities, or 14% of all vehicle occupant fatalities.

WI Law Enforcement Receive Funds to Crackdown on Highway Speeders

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Using federal funding for overtime enforcement, sheriff’s deputies and state troopers will be cracking down on speeding on heavily traveled highways in Wisconsin through September.

Approximately $480,000 in federal funding, administered by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), will be used by county sheriff’s departments and the Wisconsin State Patrol to intensify traffic safety enforcement on:

  • US 41 in Fond du Lac, Winnebago, Outagamie and Brown counties
  • I-39/90/94 in Rock, Dane, Columbia and Sauk counties
  • I-94 in Eau Claire, Dunn and St. Croix counties
Officials are hoping that intensified enforcement will reduce the number of preventable traffic deaths and injuries in Wisconsin. One official mentioned that Wisconsin experiences a surge  in traffic deaths and serious injuries in the summer due to increased traffic volumes and speeds.

According to authorities, a person is killed or injured in a speed-related crash in Wisconsin every 47 minutes. Speeding also is the most frequent traffic violation in the state. Last year, there were more than 200,000 speeding convictions in Wisconsin, including nearly 22,000 for 20 mph or more over the limit.

Wis DOT Issues Deer Warning

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is warning drivers to be on the look out for deer in the month of June.

According to DOT statistics, June is the worst or second worst month for car-deer crashes. Deer-car collisions are the third-most common vehicle crash in the state. The most common is vehicle-vehicle followed by vehicle-fixed object.

DOT officials say this is the time of year that does are looking for places to give birth, and fawns are wandering off after separating from their moms.

Last year, there were 16,338 deer vs. motor vehicle crashes in Wisconsin. Dane County had the most crashes with 873, followed by Waukesha with 680 and Shawano County with 648.

Car Pulls Out in Front of Motorcyclist

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

A 31-year-old Sun Prairie man was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon when he crashed his motorcycle into a car that had pulled out in front of him.

The motorcyclist, Andrew Morgan, suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries in the crash, which occurred on U.S. 51 and County V in the town of Windsor.

According to the sheriff’s report, Timothy Lewis, 20, of DeForest, pulled into the motorcycle’s path from County V when Morgan was southbound on U.S. 51.

Lewis was taken to a local hospital for a blood draw, to determine if controlled substances may have contributed to the crash, the sheriff’s report said.

Dangerous Madison Intersections

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

This was posted on the Wisconsin State Journal’s website today…

Tell us about Madison’s dangerous intersections

Whether or not you agree with the decision by city officials to place bike boxes where Williamson Street, John Nolen Drive, and Blair Street meet, you probably think that’s one challenging intersection: for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers alike.

What are Madison’s other dangerous intersections? Nominate your notorious crossings in an e-mail to mpitsch@madison.com. They don’t have to be the busiest intersections or those where the most accidents take place, but they have to be challenging. So let us know why you think the intersection is a tough one. We’ll collect your thoughts to help us shape a future story.

May is Motorcycle Awareness & Safety Month

Saturday, May 1st, 2010
May is Motorcycle Awareness and Safety Month. Nearly 485,000 Wisconsin residents have motorcycle licenses or permits and more than 382,000 motorcycles are registered in the state, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT).

Last year, Wisconsin saw a 17% decrease in the number of motorcycle accidents (2,829 vs. 2,347). Wisconsin officials attribute the decrease to rider training, traffic safety education and law enforcement. Fatal motorcycle accidents also declined albeit by a slim margin. Last year, 84 motorcycle drivers and passengers were killed in Wisconsin traffic crashes compared with 88 deaths in 2008. Incapacitating injuries due to motorcycle crashes also decreased from 715 in 2008 to 601 in 2009, which is 16 percent reduction.

The Wisconsin Motorcycle Safety Program has provided rider training through the state technical colleges for 28 years and has graduated more than 120,000 riders since 1982.
